Towing may be as simple as a tractor pulling a tree stump or a ride home from the bar.  The most familiar form is the transport of disabled or otherwise indisposed vehicles by a tow truck.

A tow truck (also called a wrecker, a breakdown truck, recovery vehicle or a breakdown lorry) is a truck used to move disabled, improperly parked vehicles. 

Vehicle recovery is the recovery of any vehicle to another place, generally speaking with a commercial vehicle known as a recovery vehicle, tow truck or wrecker.

Vehicle impoundment is the legal process of placing a vehicle into an impoundment

lot or tow yard, which is a holding place for cars until they are placed back

in the control of the owner, recycled for their metal, stripped of

their parts at a wrecking yard or auctioned off for the benefit of the

impounding agency. The impounding agency can be a police department

while all terms are negotiated between them & towing companies.
